2012-APRIL Nick O'Connor attended a very interesting Points Practical Course run by the British Medical Acupuncture Society at the London Hospital for Integrated Medicine. The specialist subject was needling acupucture points and triggers points of the Head and Neck.

2011-JANUARY We are going to be present at the Dengie Health Fair which will be held at the Dengie 100 Sports Centre in Burnham on Crouch on Sunday March 20th from 10am-12noon. Nick O'Connor and Samantha Carey will be there, offering advice and guidance about how osteopathy can help you. They will also be offering free 'Drivers Assessments'; our osteopaths will check your driving position to ensure that you are sitting as safely and comfortably as possible in your vehicle. 2010- OCTOBER Nick O'Connor has just returned from an interesting course focusing on the diagnosis and treatment for breathing pattern disorders.

2010-SEPTEMBER: Nick O'Connor has attended a British Medical Acupuncture Society course exploring the treatment of lower back pain with acupuncture. Over the years Nick has developed keen interest in the combination of traditional osteopathic techniques with acupuncture to treat a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions. This course was a very interesting opportunity to study the most up to date application of acupuncture for the treatment of painful and debilitating lower back problems.

2010-JUNE: Burnham Osteopathic Clinic has invited the two primary schools in Burnham on Crouch to submit designs for the Show Window Display Competition held as part of the Burnham Carnival 2010. The school submitting the winning entry will be presented with a cheque to be spent on sports equipment for the pupils. The design of the winning entry will be re-created in the shop window for the Carnival in September 2010.

2010-MAY Principal osteopath Nick O'Connor attended a Pilates Instructor course through the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute. Nick believes that a pilates based exercise programe is very effective for injury rehabilitation and can bring long-term improvements in physical health. The core aspects of his treatment and rehabilitation are a patient-specific combination of osteopathy, acupuncture and pilates-based rehabilitation exercise.

Nick O'Connor attended a post-graduate course in Neuromuscular Re-Abilitation, taught by Professor Eyal Lederman. The concepts and techniques covered in this course will be of particular benefit to patients recovering from injuries, an operation or a stroke.

If you want a health practitioner to take time to understand your whole body and to provide you with healthcare, exercise advice and lifestyle tips to help you to improve your overall state of health, then you have come to the right place. Our osteopaths will work with you to address any problems you have with your musculoskeletal system, particularly back pain, a sports injury, a stiff neck or arthritis. They can then work with you to help you to repair some of the effects of the wear and tear of life, helping you to return to, and maintain optimum health. Our osteopaths can offer guidance on rehabilitation and exercises you can do to prolong the benefits of the treatment, ergonomic advice and lifestyle tips on how to improve your long-term health.

We have male and female osteopaths who will work with you to diagnose the source of your pain. The osteopath will ask many questions to glean information about the root cause of the pain. He or she will watch the way your body moves which will reveal further information about the cause of the pain. Then they will use a highly trained sense of touch to diagnose the state of the body tissue, they will assess the tension in the muscles and the surrounding tissue, notice any unusual resistance in your joints. Putting all this information together, the osteopath will create a treatment plan tailored to your precise needs, taking into account your age, general health, physical health and any other relevant factors. When appropriate the osteopath may also use ultrasound or dry-needling (a western medicine form of acupuncture). Nick O'Connor is a member of the British Medical Acupuncture Society.

The holistic approach of osteopathic care can help to diagnose the causes of long-term pain that have not responded to more standard medical care. It is not unusual for pain to present at quite some distance from the source of the pain. For instance it is quite common for pain in the knee, ankle or foot to be emanating from the lower back, as pain in the hand, wrist or elbow can originate from a problem in the upper back. In some cases recurrent headaches or migraines can be linked to problems with your neck and upper back.

Osteopathic treatment is also extremely effective for sporting injuries such as hamstring strains, tennis elbow and Achilles tendonitis. A regular session with an osteopath can help to fine tune an exercise program by identifying muscular tensions and imbalances in their early stages. Using this information the training regime can be adjusted to correct the problem before an injury develops.

All our osteopaths are trained in cranial osteopathy, a specialised form of osteopathy; Samantha Carey has a strong interest in cranial osteopathy and paediatric osteopathy; Samantha is currently working towards a post-graduate qualification in Paediatric Osteopathy with the Osteopathic Centre for Children. Cranial osteopathy can be used to assess babies from a very early age using extremely gentle techniques. Treatment can address any areas of strain or tension that are detected, working gently to release them.
